Petronas 50th Anniversary Torch Project

To celebrate Petronas’ 50 years of excellence, we were tasked with designing a torch that symbolizes unity, innovation, and sustainability while connecting communities across Malaysia. Inspired by the spirit of togetherness and progress, we collaborated with talented Malaysian creators and leveraged cutting-edge biocomposite technology to bring this vision to life.

Our Creative Process

Every detail of the project was designed to reflect Petronas’ legacy and its future-focused values:

1. Collaborative Vision

Partnering with a Computer Science graduate from Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP), and a Materials Technology master’s graduate from University Malaya (UM), we blended technical expertise with innovative thinking. 

2. Material Innovation

The torch handles were crafted using kenaf, a sustainable and eco-friendly material sourced by Midwest Composites. This advanced biocomposite solution highlights the commitment to sustainability and Malaysian craftsmanship.

3. Design Excellence

Inspired by the iconic Olympic torch, we aimed to create a design that is both functional and symbolic. The torch unites East and West Malaysia, with intricate details representing the cultural and environmental diversity of the nation.

The Result

The final product is a handcrafted kenaf torch handle that has journeyed across Malaysia, connecting communities and celebrating five decades of Petronas’ legacy. The project showcases the power of innovation while also the importance of collaboration and sustainability in creating meaningful experiences.
